Camborne Town Trail

The Old Market House

Camborne Library

At the front of the church turn right up Church Street. On your right is the Berkeley Centre, once the Market House. The original one was built in 1802 and in the 1830s a larger market was erected.

Severe storm damage in 1864 resulted in a new building funded by John Francis Basset, the squire of Tehidy, and this opened in 1867. Inside were the Town Hall, Magistrates' Rooms, a Public Hall and Assembly Rooms.

Look for the Basset family coat-of-arms in the stonework. In 1911 an upper storey was added, known as St George's Hall; this later became the Scala Cinema. The White City Skating Rink was here and reflected the national craze for roller skating.

Tyack's Hotel

Opposite on your left is Tyack's Hotel. Constructed by Philip Vincent in about 1780, the main section of the hotel was originally called the King's Head, indicating it was the most important local inn or hotel.

Around 1900 William Tyack purchased the inn and the family held the licence for nearly 100 years, changing the name to the Tyack's Hotel.
